EPS Architectural Mouldings vs Cast Stone
EPS architectural mouldings and cast stone can create similar architectural details, but they are different products. Cast stone is a high-density cementitious material, while EPS profiles use a lightweight, non-loadbearing core with a protective coating and agreed decorative finish. The right choice depends on the design, supporting construction, desired appearance, access, handling and project-specific fixing requirements.
A practical comparison
EPS mouldings and cast stone can both form cornices, coping details, window surrounds, quoins and other architectural features. They should not be treated as the same product, however. Their material construction affects unit weight, handling, manufacture, support and the way the project detail is developed.

Weight, support and site handling
The lightweight EPS core significantly reduces profile weight compared with traditional cast-stone detailing. Depending on profile size and access, this may simplify handling and reduce the load imposed on the supporting construction. A site-specific manual-handling assessment is still required, and larger or more complex profiles may need additional lifting or support arrangements.
Reduced weight does not remove the need for a suitable substrate and approved fixing detail. The supporting construction must be sound and appropriate for the permanent bond and any supplementary mechanical fixing required by the project.
Shape, appearance and finish
Taylormade profiles are CNC-cut from approved information, so standard details can be adapted and bespoke geometry can be considered without creating a traditional casting mould for each shape. Geometry remains subject to technical feasibility, handling, transport and installation requirements.
The finished appearance is determined by the profile shape and agreed decorative finish rather than by the EPS core alone. Smooth, painted and stone-effect finishes can be considered where the proposed system is compatible with the factory basecoat. An approved sample or agreed manufacturer reference can be used where colour or texture is critical.
How should a project team choose?
The choice should be based on the architectural intent, required material, supporting construction, interfaces, access, handling and programme rather than appearance alone. EPS profiles are appropriate where a lightweight, non-loadbearing manufactured detail suits the project. A specification that requires cast stone as a material should be assessed on that basis.

Common questions
Do EPS mouldings replace structural stone?
No. Taylormade EPS profiles are non-loadbearing facade components. They do not replace a structural member, and later fixtures must be fixed back to an appropriate structural substrate.
Will an EPS profile look the same as cast stone?
The appearance depends on the profile geometry, texture, colour and decorative finish selected for the project. An approved sample is the best reference where a particular appearance is required. An exact match to weathered natural or manufactured materials cannot be guaranteed.
Can both materials be used on the same project?
Potentially, if the project design and interfaces allow it. Each material should retain its own appropriate support, fixing and weathering details, coordinated by the responsible project team.
